Pathfinders Diary: Halfway through the journey, an interview with Conor Robinson

At the halfway point in Pathfinders Project’s yearlong service trip, Chris Stedman interviewed the project’s director, Conor Robinson, about their work so far, what lies ahead, and Conor’s hopes for the future of humanist service and the freethought community. Pathfinders Project is laying the foundations for a Humanist Action: Ghana, to launch later in 2014.

International service is not for everyone, and some people will object to the idea of doing service for any other reason than the cause itself. However, evidence suggests that the cause alone is an insufficient motivator for most people, and that rates of charitable giving and volunteering increase within communities that encourage it. Speaking from my own experience, I know that my Humanism has helped me to define my service, and that my service has deepened my Humanism. The Humanist Action: Ghana will help others do the same.

The Pathfinders are now building latrines in Haiti with Children of the Border to help prevent the spread of cholera. In a country still struggling to recover from the devastating 2010 earthquake, cholera has killed more than 8,000 people. Latrines are needed to stop the spread of the waterborne illness.
