Black Lives Must Matter

A letter from the board

Dear Members,

Across the nation, communities are reeling from the latest racial injustices and unchecked police brutality. The protests are a result of years of suffering, exasperation, and extrajudicial killings of Black men, women, and children.

We’ve seen the latest: Tony McDade, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbery.

As Humanists, we believe that we are all in this together, or at least we should be. It is our responsibility to lend our voices and helping hands in defending and uplifting human life. Our humanism binds us all, but for all lives to matter, Black Lives must also matter.

Foundation Beyond Belief strives to build bridges across cultures and respect among all people and share in the human experience. We are committed to building a world in which all basic human needs are met, suffering is reduced, and inequalities are eradicated. We begin by extending our sincere, heartfelt sympathies to the loved ones of Tony McDade, George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. We join in mourning their unspeakably tragic and untimely deaths. We stand in solidarity with our Black families, friends, neighbors, and members in their time of need. We implore that you help them shoulder their everyday lives so that they have the necessary time to mourn and process the deeper meanings of these losses.

And as the protests continue, we ask that no matter how painful or uncomfortable, we review these events with transparency and recognize there are systemic problems in our society that desperately need our attention.

We stand in solidarity.

We must act now. Here are some resources for getting started.
