December Team of the Month: Lehigh Valley Humanists

Congratulations to Beyond Belief Network’s December Team of the Month: Lehigh Valley Humanists (LVH)! This Level 2 team is located in Bethlehem, PA. LVH were chosen for this honor because of their regular service event schedule and ongoing projects within their community. Lehigh Valley Humanists were previously honored as our March Picture of the Month.

LVH1 LVH2LVH3LVH4One of the team’s ongoing service projects is their year-long commitment to the 6th Street Shelter in Allentown, PA. The shelter temporarily houses working families until they find permanent housing. LVH has adopted an apartment at the shelter; team members are responsible for cleaning and preparing the space for incoming families. Last month, Lehigh Valley Humanists cleaned, scrubbed and outfitted a six-bed unit. The apartment needed a lot of household items including dishes, pots, pans, utensils and linens, which has used up much of the team's donated resources. Lehigh Valley Humanists are making plans for a future donation drive.

LVH9 LVH10 LVH8Another team project involves participating in the Adopt-a-Highway program. LVH adopted a one-mile stretch of Fish Hatchery Road in Allentown, PA. This area is regularly visited by the public as it includes a park and an American Indian Cultural museum. Over the summer, the team collected plenty of trash and made an effort to separate any recyclable material.

LVH7 Lehigh Valley Humanists also participated in Foundation Beyond Belief’s Week of Action in April. Eighteen members, wearing their LVH and FBB t-shirts, were involved in the Great Allentown Cleanup. They concentrated their efforts in the area around their monthly meeting place, covering over ten city blocks!

In February, Lehigh Valley Humanists collected fifteen bags of non-perishable food for donation to the Catasauqau Food Bank in Catasauqua, PA. One member gave a $100 donation to the food bank towards future food purchases or expenses. Donations were brought to that month’s general meeting and delivered to the food bank immediately afterward.

Beyond Belief Network is proud to support Lehigh Valley Humanists and wishes them continued success in their endeavors.

Team of the Month recognition is a benefit provided by Foundation Beyond Belief to our Beyond Belief Network teams. In order to be considered, your group must be a Level One Beyond Belief Network team and you must submit at least one event report during the month. Team of the Month selection is based on the number, length, variety, and documentation (e.g., submitted pictures, blog posts, videos, etc.) of events.

Teams can only be Team of the Month once per calendar year. If your local group does great service work, but isn’t a member of BBN, you can join anytime! In addition to recognition, your team can qualify for free t-shirts and grants. If your local humanist group doesn’t volunteer, but you’d like to start, we’d love to help! For teams new to secular service, we offer tons of ideas, event guides, and advice.
