Our 2020 Election Day Endorsements and Predictions

It’s finally here. Election Day. With so much at stake for the future of our planet and the people who inhabit it, the weight of the day is deeply felt by anyone with a conscience. As a 501(c)3 charitable nonprofit, Foundation Beyond Belief does not endorse candidates. But what we do endorse this election cycle are the humanist values that ground our organization and underpin the more compassionate world we’re trying to build.

Foundation Beyond Belief’s Statement of Values

At FBB, our values drive our actions, inspire our creativity, and hold us accountable. We believe that every human being is deserving of dignity and that we all must contribute to restorative and regenerative innovation that is necessary for a circular world. More specifically, our values distill down to these core commitments:

• We engage with others through honest, courageous conversations and investing in community-led solutions.
• We support evidence-based, no-waste, sustainable solutions to meet human needs.

Because we see humanists putting these values into action every day individually and through our Beyond Belief Network teams, our prediction for the 2020 election is that — no matter who wins the highest office — humanists like you will continue to care for our planet and for our people. We know that positive change requires human beings to take responsibility for and affect change. We are not waiting for miracles, but are working for them. And throughout human history, we have witnessed what that work can accomplish.

Whether we end up celebrating or despairing when we see the results of this election, there will still be work to do. More than a quarter of a million people are dead from COVID-19 in the US — disproportionately in already-marginalized communities. One in four US households has faced food insecurity this year. Hurricanes, wildfires, and other disasters cause more than a million people to be displaced each year in this country alone. One election will not solve everything, but we have hope that the collective action of dedicated people of conscience can have a big impact on some of our most urgent and intractable challenges.

When all the votes are cast and the dust is settled, no matter the results, there will still be people who need support and care. As humanists, we are ready to roll up our sleeves. We’ll be joining mutual aid communities and volunteer networks. We will be connecting with our local city and county governments to ensure sound climate policy and social safety nets in our areas. We’ll continue to be generous and compassionate. We will be hopeful and brave. We believe in a humanist world, and we will work together to build it.
