HDRT Development Coordinator to speak in OK
By AdministratorOur Humanist Disaster Recovery Teams Development Coordinator, Rebecca Vitsmun, will be speaking tomorrow, June 20, at the 2015 Oklahoma Freethought Convention at the Tulsa Convention Center. Her speech is scheduled to begin at 2:15 pm.
In addition to Rebecca, the convention features other speakers such as Seth Andrews of The Thinking Atheist and Matt Dillahunty, current host of the webcast and cable access television show “The Atheist Experience.” You can find more information on their website.
Rebecca first came to the attention of many in the nation back in 2013 when an EF5 tornado destroyed her Moore, OK home and left Rebecca and her son, Anders, running for their lives. Shorty afterward, while standing in the rubble, she was asked if she was thankful to God for saving their lives and Rebecca's quiet and unplanned, "I'm actually an atheist," was just the beginning.
After being proselytized to by volunteers, Rebecca made the decision to find a humanist disaster recovery team to become involved with, only to discover none existed. She has teamed up with Foundation Beyond Belief to use her award-winning background in volunteer coordination to develop the Humanist Disaster Recovery Teams program for FBB.
As the Humanist Disaster Recovery Teams Development Coordinator, Rebecca is collaborating with secular groups leaders, potential volunteers, and experts in various areas of disaster recovery to develop the first national disaster recovery volunteer program for our community. She is developing the infrastructure for this program and building our national database of volunteers who are ready and willing to help out should disaster strike.
Tickets for the 2015 Oklahoma Freethought Convention can be purchased from the FreeOK website here.
