May Team of the Month: Tri-State Freethinkers

By

TSF1 Congratulations to Beyond Belief Network’s May Team of the Month: Tri-State Freethinkers! This Level Three team hails from Union, Kentucky and was featured as April’s Picture of the Month. Tri-State Freethinkers was chosen for this distinction because of their regular service event schedule and dedication towards their local community.

TSF3 One of the team’s favorite service events is volunteering at Freestore Foodbank. This month, they sorted through over 10,000 lbs. of donations. Another of their regular service events is doing yard maintenance and gardening at Hosea House, which provides fresh food for those in need in Northern Kentucky. Tri-State Freethinkers have helped Planned Parenthood with their weekly phone banking to reach out and identify supporters and inform residents of upcoming voting issues as well as pending legislation.

TSF1 (1)Tri-State Freethinkers are a team that serves as a positive presence in their community. In January, team members donated six pints of blood at Hoxworth in Cincinnati. The next month, thirteen members of the team participated in the local Polar Bear Plunge. In March, the team collected 30 bags of dry food and 50 cans of wet food for the Cincinnati Pet Food Pantry. The Cincinnati Pet Food Pantry collects and distributes pet food to those who have pets but may not be able to afford purchasing food. Team volunteers also assisted at the pantry in sorting, moving, and filling pet food orders. That same month, Tri-State Freethinkers worked with Faces Without Places, a group that throws birthday parties each month for homeless children. Team members threw a party for kids that included cupcakes, goodie bags, games, and even a magician!

TF1 Tri-State Freethinkers are always thinking about how to serve their community – even during the weekends! In mid-April, the team held back-to-back service events. On Saturday, April 11th, volunteers helped build the foundation of a project with Habitat for Humanity. The next day, Sunday, April 12th, Tri-State Freethinkers removed enough litter to fill over five garbage bags from a stretch of the highway in front of the Creation Museum. Later that same month, team members volunteered at Tender Mercies, which transforms the lives of homeless adults with mental illnesses. Tri-State Freethinkers planned a day of games, crafts, and snacks for their residents.

Beyond Belief Network is proud to support Tri-State Freethinkers and wishes them continued success in their endeavors.

Team of the Month recognition is a benefit provided by Foundation Beyond Belief to our Beyond Belief Network teams. In order to be considered, your group must be a Level One Beyond Belief Network team and you must submit at least one event report during the month. Team of the Month selection is based on the number, length, variety, and documentation (e.g., submitted pictures, blog posts, videos, etc.) of events.

Teams can only be Team of the Month once per calendar year. If your local group does great service work, but isn’t a member of BBN, you can join anytime! In addition to recognition, your team can qualify for free t-shirts and grants. If your local humanist group doesn’t volunteer, but you’d like to start, we’d love to help! For teams new to secular service, we offer tons of ideas, event guides, and advice.
