WHEN: 03/18/2023@8:00am - 03/21/2023 WHERE: Barangay Soloc, Lobo, Batangas
From March 18-21, 2023, a team of dedicated students from Batangas State University conducted a Waste Analysis and Characterization Study (WACS) in the municipality of Lobo, Batangas, Philippines. The goal of the study was to better understand the types of waste produced in the area, including recyclable, residual, biodegradable, and special waste. Unfortunately, upon reviewing the data from similar studies in other municipalities, the team discovered that despite the segregation of waste, it was all mixed up and disposed of in landfills, which is a counterproductive measure due to the lack of proper waste management facilities. Recognizing the need for a more sustainable solution, the HAPI Green Movement took action by initiating the “HAPI Barangay Composting Initiative: Providing Composting Drum for Sustainable Waste Management”. This initiative aimed to provide composting bags to the WACS team and donate them to the barangay for their further use, thus reducing the amount of biodegradable waste that is improperly disposed of. With the help of the composting drums provided by HAPI Green Movement, the barangay will be able to manage their waste more sustainably and reduce their environmental impact in the long run. This initiative is a small but significant step towards a greener and cleaner future for the people of Batangas, and it is inspiring to see young students taking the lead in creating positive change in their community.
