Every 14th day of March, International Day of Action for Rivers is celebrated. There is substantial evidence to support the idea that plastic waste from rivers comes from households and other sources near them, and that this waste often ends up in the oceans. Microplastics are found in high concentrations in rivers near urban areas: Studies have found that rivers near densely populated areas have higher concentrations of microplastics (tiny plastic particles) than those in more rural areas. This suggests that the plastic waste is coming from sources like households, businesses, and industries. To protect the rivers from plastic pollution and in celebration of the International Day of Action for Rivers, HAPI Green Movement Ambassador led the project: “HAPI Community Clean-Up: Tackling Litter in Our Neighborhoods”, where trash bags were placed in strategic areas in the barangay to decrease the amount of improperly disposed plastic wastes in its open spaces. This project hoped to influence how one sees the contribution of plastic waste reduction in making a barangay a healthy place to live in.
