Come assist Van Buren Shelter (https://ymcacolumbus.org/locations/vanburen) staff in serving dinners and cleaning up on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Masks are required for all volunteers regardless of vaccination status. Dinner for the women begins at 5 pm. The kitchen is near the main entrance denoted with a blue mark on the map above. There is ample free parking available in the shelter's lot. The approved areas to park are in yellow in the photo above. Please do not park in the areas outlined in red as your vehicle may get towed. The shelter needs a list of volunteer names the day before the event. If your first and last name are not in your username, you can provide them by sending Andrew a message on this site, emailing, or texting him (see below). Afterwards some of us go to the Omnipresent Atheists Weekly Meetup in progress to have a bit to eat or drink (https://www.meetup.com/omnipresentatheists/). Since we will be working around families, the YMCA does not permit volunteering by individuals with convictions for violent or sexual crimes. The YMCA reserves the right to run background checks on volunteers. For questions, comment on this page or contact: Andrew, awhit12@yahoo.com, (614)937-5802 (cell). Please let Andrew know if you volunteer anytime other than our COUNT events so that he can count your hours toward our service record.

The Columbus Coalition of Reason regularly holds blood donation events at the Carriage Place Red Cross Donor Center in Columbus, Ohio. Some donors give 1 unit of whole blood while others do apheresis donating up to 3 units of platelets (and up to 2 units of plasma) or 2 units of red blood cells. Events are planned for Third Thursdays in January, March, May, July, September and November. We have to forgo having dinner together during the Covid-19 quarantine and may be donating at different locations on different days. The Red Cross helps us stay safe by requiring use of hand sanitizer at the door and facemasks. Donors do not sit at the same table afterward. Currently, these events are not as fun as when we can socialize together, but they are more meaningful. We look forward to the end of the pandemic so that we can resume dining together after donating. We are proud that we have continued to provide this "essential service" during the pandemic. NOTE: CURRENTLY YOU MUST SCHEDULE IN ADVANCE VIA CALLING OR ONLINE! To ensure physical distancing, walk in donors are not allowed during the quarantine. Please call 1-800-Red-Cross (1-800-733-2767) or sign up at https://www.redcross.org/ to schedule your appointment.

The Adaptive Sports Connection (ASC), a chapter of Move United (formerly Disabled Sports USA), helps Ohio veterans, children, and adults who need adaptive equipment or instruction to participate in various sports including skiing, kayaking and cycling. ASC maintains a substantial fleet of adaptive sit-down and standup equipment for novice skiers and snowboarders with various capabilities. Trained Winter Sports Volunteers assist certified lead instructors in giving 2-3 hour lessons to students with various handicaps. Volunteers help assess students, select outriggers and other equipment, adjust before the lesson and help during the lesson. Students may be accompanied by a friend or family member who will learn how to assist with getting on and off lifts so that students can ski or snowboard without instructors.

The Adaptive Sports Connection (ASC), a chapter of Disabled Sports USA, helps Ohio veterans, children, and adults who need adaptive equipment or instruction to participate in various sports including skiing, kayaking and cycling. Two COUNT members helped teach lessons and attended clinics for volunteer skills development. 8 COUNT volunteers have worked 337.5 hours at 36 ASC Winter Sports events divided between training, lessons with students and clinics. COUNT members have participated in 80 ASC Cycling, Winter Sports, Kayaking and/or Sailing events, contributing 573 hours since we started working with ASC in August 2018.
