UTEC update shows personal accomplishment

By

"A life off the streets, free of violence and poverty, is what I want for myself and my son. It hasn't been easy, but UTEC's motto is to never give up on a young person, and they have never given up on me.

I got lucky the day I met the director of UTEC's Streetworker program. Jonathan had his own struggles early on, so was easy to relate to. He's impossible not to like, and he convinced me that UTEC could help me move forward in a positive way.

UTEC has given me encouragement, education, and training to overcome the challenges I face. After one month at UTEC, I earned my HiSET (GED) as well as culinary certifications, and I am now interning at Whole Foods Market.

These accomplishments have given me confidence in myself. I believe the biggest challenges create the strongest people. My challenges are great, but I am strong. My past is behind me and my future is bright. And so is my son's."

Foundation Beyond Belief is proud to support UTEC (formerly known as United Teen Equality Center) as our 3rd quarter Poverty and Health beneficiary. Shaun's story highlights only one of the countless at-risk youth and young adults who are being helped by UTEC with funding from FBB. UTEC received a $9200 grant from Foundation Beyond Belief in 2016.
