March Team of the Month: Humanists of Houston

By

Congratulations to Beyond Belief Network’s March’s Team of the Month: Humanists of Houston! Based in Houston, TX, the team was chosen for this honor because of their strong commitment to their community illustrated by their regular service events at local organizations addressing the issues of hunger and homelessness. Humanists of Houston are a Level 1 team and was previously honored as October 2015’s Picture of the Month.

In 2016, Humanists of Houston have had two Atheists Helping the Homeless events when volunteers go to a downtown parking lot and give out various items to aid the homeless like toiletries, clothing, fresh fruit, socks, and books. They also volunteered at the Houston Food Bank by sorting grapefruit, stacking bread, and cleaning up the warehouse. These are the latest of recurring Atheists Helping the Homeless and Houston Food Bank events.

In March 2016, Humanists of Houston had a team in the Race Against Violence 5k fundraiser for the Houston Area Women's Center. Since 1977, the Houston Area Women's Center has provided shelter and support services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence. The "Race Against Violence" is one of the agency's major annual fundraising events, enabling the center to offer all of its services free of charge.

Beyond Belief Network is proud to support Humanists of Houston and wishes them continued success in their endeavors.

Team of the Month recognition is a benefit provided by Foundation Beyond Belief to our Beyond Belief Network teams. In order to be considered, your group must be a Level One Beyond Belief Network team and you must submit at least one event report during the month. Team of the Month selection is based on the number, length, variety, and documentation (e.g., submitted pictures, blog posts, videos, etc.) of events.

Teams can only be Team of the Month once per calendar year. If your local group does great service work but isn’t a member of BBN, you can join anytime! In addition to recognition, your team can qualify for free t-shirts and grants. If your local humanist group doesn’t volunteer, but you’d like to start, we’d love to help! For teams new to secular service, we offer tons of ideas, event guides, and advice.
